The Morinda Citrifolia is one of the most important discoveries among natural remedies of last decades.

Directly from Indonesia a juice rich in phyto-nutriments, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, for centuries used as efficient healing agent against numerous diseases. What does Noni contain:

For milleniums noni was considered “a miracle”, but first scientific researches where done only in the 20th century. We should thank the mother Nature for creating such a whole of extraordinary substances in a single fruit. No other fruit or plant from a botanic world has got similar characteristic.

Noni contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes, oligoelements and sterols. Moreover, it was discovered That Noni contains the complete spectrum of aminoacids what makes it a perfect source of proteins.
Every part of the Noni plant is helpful and usable, in efect the ancient tropical people did use: the seeds for laxativ function, the leaves for external inflammations and to reduce pain, the rind for its astringent proprieties, the root extracts for reducing the blood pressure, the flower essences against eyes’ inflammations; but the most precious part of the Noni plant is the fruit, thanks to its numerous beneficial actions.

Chemical Components:

*Noni contains different chemical elements.

  • First of all, it shows a remarkable number of terpene compounds, three of them - L. Asperuloside, aucubine e glucose have been identified from their acetylic derivates. Both, caproic acid and caprylic acid have been isolated.
  • On other hand, the fruits of the Noni shrub are recognized as a very good font of vitamin C.
  • Moreover, the Hawaiian Noni is connected with the organism’s synthesis of xeronine that has large and important repercussions for our health.
  • As last, the alkaloid content of the Noni fruit is considered for heaving its own therapeutic proprieties. The alkaloids show a wide range of pharmacological and biological activities for human beans. These are organic compounds that contain nitrogen and react with acids for building salts that are basis of numerous medicines. Finally the enzymatic actions of Noni represent a rare promoter for cell’s health.

What is Noni:

The Noni plant, scientifically called Morinda Citrifolia, is part of the Rubaiceae plant family, as well as coffee and quinine. Originating from South East Asia, it extended to Polynesia, China, India, South Pacific, Tahiti, Hawaii and other tropical countries thanks to its seeds able to float in the water for months and months and be transported from one coastline to the other without putrefying.
Morinda Citrifolia is an evergreen plant, can reach the height of 4 till 6 meters: has got hard and rough branches that generates oval and dark green shining leaves. Small white flowers blossom out of grape-shaped pods that generate a fruit. A ripe fruit is similar to an irregular potato and with a lot of protuberances. Its color is white-yellowish and the peel is very thin, watery and gelatinous. The pulp of the fruit is sour and when completely ripe it produces a characteristic rancid smell because it contains carbonic acid.

Discovering and history:

As already mentioned, Noni is original from South East Asia. Around the year 100 b. C. some of local inhabitants migrated to French Polynesia, carrying with them animals and plants important for their survival in new areas. These plants had different purposes: some where used for making clothes, some as construction materials, and others as food or medicine. For Polynesian people, the most important eatable plants were: noni, yam, breadfruit tree, banana, batata (sweet potato), and sugar cane.

Polynesians used the noni for healing every kind of illness, such as: wounds, skin diseases, respiratory ailments (including asthma), fever end elder’s infirmity. The knowledge of noni’s healthful benefits has been passed from generation to generation by means of folk songs and fairy-tales.
The polynesian ancient healer, named Kahuna, was a person of fundamental importance for the traditional polynesian medicine and he always used noni as a basis for his therapies.

The testimonials about curative effects of noni were found in ancient writings form the period when the Han’s dynasty reigned in China, more then 2000 years ago. We can find some traces also in the folk theater representations, written during the reign of Java’s kings a couple of centuries ago.

The development of the textile industry in Europe pushed the research for new coloring materials towards colonial territories, because at that time the synthetic colorants were not yet discovered. In the 1849 the european scientists discovered a natural colorant obtained from roots of the noni plant, which was afterwards named “Morindone” and “Morindino". The name “Morinda” is a result of this discovery.

The Europeans learned about the beneficial effects of noni only around the year 1800 when the Capitan Cook and his men reached the Hawaii (1778).
Since the noni was considered as a miracle by the natives because of its capacities to heal illnesses, a lot of western researcher began to examine this “magic” fruit. For the first time in the 1860, the natural medicine based on noni was described in some european articles.

Year Events:

  • 100 b.C. The inhabitants from South East Asia migrate to the Franch Polynesia, carrying with them the noni’s seeds.
  • 1894 The Europeans discover the colorant substance obtained from the roots of noni plant. This was named Morindone or Morindino.
  • 1860 Some european writings for the first time mention noni as a medicine.
  • 1950 Some anti-bacterial substances were found contained in noni.
  • 1969-1989 A scientific research was carried out to prove that noni reduces hypertension.
  • 1972 The bio-chemist Dr. Ralph Heinicke begins a study about the correlation between xeronin and noni.
  • 1993-1994 An anticancer substance (Damnacantale) was found contained in noni fruit.
